On the Saturday it was decided to go to another suburb of the capital - Oranienburg. Looking at the familiar outline of the transport system in Berlin, have found the best route: first underground U6 to station Alt-Tegel, then transfer to a train S25 and ride in the opposite direction to the station Schonholz and finally by train S1 to the end station Oranienburg. Strayed a bit, going to the subway, with local residents find the train station Alt-Tegel and was surprised to find that the nearest train as much as 23 minutes! Usually the waiting time is less than 10 minutes, so we buy for 70 cents in the machine, coffee and enjoy the taste of real cappuccino.
On arrival at the passenger station Oranienburg, we did not know where to go or go on as before did not look in the internet for information about this place. The only thing I knew Ira - in Oranienburg during the Second World War there was a concentration camp. Specifically where it is located and how called - for us it was a mystery. I had to ask passers-by, two of them were the same with visitors and could not help us, and only one woman said she saw a group of tourists from the U.S., which were sent to the museum today, but before that - concentration camp - Sachsenhausen. She also pointed us in the direction of motion and we soon fell to the tail Americans. In fact, as soon as we walked from the train station, we saw a sign for the museum, before it was about 2 miles away, but we decided to take our time and quietly pursued a colorful group of tourists from North America.
After about half an hour achieve the goal - the former concentration camp. Visiting the museum is free, was bought for a small nominal fee schematic map and go to the territory of the historical building. We pass by the building of the former concentration camp management, the gate can read the inscription, which later became the nominal, - "Arbeit macht frei" ("work makes you free").
The territory preserved many objects: living barracks, hospital and morgue, which hosts horrible experiments on people, buildings, prisons with single cells in which a prisoner known prisoners. Scary to imagine what horrors have seen here prisoners. In the basement of one of the huts is a room for washing vegetables, here the walls are covered with various images of potatoes washed under running water, and carrots pass medical examination by a doctor.
In some years, the prison population exceeded 60 thousand people, all perished in the camp of about 100,000 prisoners. It contained both Soviet prisoners of war, and citizens of other countries. In the middle of a huge parade ground is now set majestic monument - a monument to Soviet soldiers who 22 April 1945 entered the camp and saved from death being there at that time 3000 people.
The way home seemed to us faster, we tried to train German donuts, bought from one of the small bakeries Oranienburg. Rest of the day decided to devote visiting several major shopping centers. The first step is going to Alexanderplatz - there that day fair was held. On the area of the carousel found everywhere were stalls with various sweets and drinks.
Then went to the shopping center KaDeWe - one of the most famous in Berlin. In more than 80 thousand people come here to shop, sit in a cafe and just walk around the premises. It is a huge building on six floors which are a large number of boutiques, restaurants and cafes. We have, up to the fifth floor, and bought ice cream for myself, for all his stay in Germany, it was probably the most delicious. In sixth is deli departments caught in the Guinness Book! Here you can find more than one thousand three hundred varieties of cheese, thousands of varieties of sausage and four varieties of bread.
Another shopping center we visited was the Europa-Center, located nearby. In it we remember very unique water clock. They are a set of flasks and tanks filled with colored green liquid. Every hour, when filled with "bulb-minute", the liquid flowed through the pipes and filled the "flask-hour." The sight is very big!
Ira asked to photograph it with a bear - the symbol of Berlin. Meet the shape of this animal can be anywhere: at the train station, near the restaurant, on the site of the shop. Many souvenir shops you can buy a souvenir little bear. So far it is not known why the coat of arms of Berlin showing off this particular beast. According to the first version of the city was founded around the bear's den, the second - the history of the animal may overlap with Albrecht the Bear, who is believed to be able to be the founder of Berlin.
After much shopping, tired and hungry, stroll into the KFC and buy NZ 8,5 € a set of chicken breasts and wings, fries, salad and a drink. Near the area held a theatrical performance. Representatives of one of the world's religions in colorful costumes sang and performed a kind of dance. After watching a half hour of this action, we went back to the hotel.
